Split is a 17-century old city, historical and cultural center of Dalmatia, Croatia. Three surrounding regions and nearly 500.000 people gravitate to Split for work and leisure every day. Before the pandemic, Split recorded nearly 3.000.000 overnight tourist stays per year.

Beside the attractiveness of its touristic offer, Split is proud to be Croatian University center, sports center, cultural center, strategic transport center. Split is also a shipbuilding center with aspirations towards renewable energy ships. With developed Regional IT Incubator Spinit for start-ups and, under construction by 2023, Regional Technology Park Dračevac for smart businesses, Split tends to be highly developed and networked smart technology center. Split also has a high economic potential in full energy transition towards renewable energy resources, as one of the Croatian cities with highest insolation (300 sunny days per year) and solar potential to use and capitalize.

Smart city development in Split emphasizes the necessity of stronger Triple-helix local eco-system in the city of Split, with networked smart technology companies and manufacturers, University of Split, local administration and civil sector as enablers, support and end users. In order to back up the Triple helix model of local economy, City of Split is developing various Smart City solutions, out of which two are being promoted via ICC network: Split Smart City platform for digitalization of all public activities and Mapping of solar potential in Split.

To support and reach its smart city goals, City of Split with University of Split is creating its first „Strategy for the Development of the Smart City of Split until 2030”, aiming at accomplishing European goals of sustainability until year 2030, Green Deal goals and European decarbonisation goals until year 2050. Recently, City of Split, in the context of the Green Cities Framework with technical support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is developing Green Cities Action Plan & Policy Dialogue – City of Split.
